Corrosion Basics and Assessment Techniques for Historic Concrete and Masonry Structures

Description

Corrosion is a universal condition affecting existing reinforced concrete and historic masonry clad steel frame construction. Corrosion can be understood as a series of chemical changes which occur within the structure, accelerated by a number of influencing factors. Due to the symbiotic relationship of the materials, deficiencies in concrete or cladding, lead to propagation of steel corrosion. As the steel corrosion initiate, it damages the concrete or masonry cladding, further exasperating conditions and posing a risk to the longevity of the structure, to pedestrians, and without mitigation, will lead to cyclic deterioration and ever costly repetitive repairs. As corrosion is a measurable and quantifiable reaction, there are key non-destructive test methods which can be utilized to determine risk, rate, and severity of corrosion on an existing structure which is further complemented with service life models that can provide the client with time frames for interventions. The seminar will cover corrosion basics, deterioration, diagnostics, and touch on long-term durable repairs which proactively address corrosion in existing and historic structures.

Speaker Bio

Gina Crevello, Principal of Echem Consultants, is an architectural and materials conservator with a primary focus on diagnosing material degradation and sensitively repairing in historic reinforced concrete structures, masonry clad steel frame buildings, and atmospherically exposed metals. With 28 years of experience, she is the first US/UK trained architectural conservator to specialize in electrochemical conservation and treatment methods for historic buildings. Gina is recognized for this expertise internationally and leads all historic or sensitive architectural / arts-based projects in her office. She is a life member and Fellow of the APTI having served on the board for 13 years, including as President during the pandemic. She has co-authored over 25 publications on material diagnostics, corrosion and Impressed Current Cathodic Protection, and co-chaired numerous symposia with the NACE, ICRI and ACI’s joint Concrete Service Life Conference.
